As much as I love "Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown", I think in some respects I consider "Departures" a grittier travel show.
The latter show was developed by Scott Wilson and Andre Dupuis. The show features two hosts traveling the world with a single camera man ... a three person show... basically it's as bare-bones as one can get.
However one big difference between this show and Parts Unknown is that in Departures the hosts also talk about the problems that arise when someone is "on the road" constantly.
For myself, one particularly memorable episode is when the trio go to Ascension Island. In that episode, we see one of the hosts, Justin, discuss how the travel is leading to the collapse of his relationship with his girlfriend.
After the Ascension Island episode, Justin and his gf break up and the three went to Japan. Later we see Justin hitting on several Japanese girls..
Bourdain does touch up these topics a bit, but nowhere with the detail as this series. I often wondered if, after Bourdain's marriage with Ottavia collapsed, if he had flings with girls while traveling ... some books hint that his handlers did get him hookers, so perhaps that was how it was handled.
