As a GenX-er, we grew up knowing a chain-store called K-mart .. it was a discount store headquartered in Troy, Michigan that primarily sold low-cost items ... similar to what WALMART does today.
However, it also holds a special place for GenX-ers in that there were endless high-schools insults which referenced this place ... primarily as a way to show how poor you/your family where ....
Example:
"Your family's SO poor, that when you were born, the first words you heard were ATTENTION K-MART SHOPPERS!!"
Sadly the chain closed in the US, but it was nice to see that's still "kickin" down-under!
